Southwest Mountains House Addition, Barboursville, Va.

What started as a small tenant farmer’s house on a lane, became a country home with a porch to drink in the Southwest Mountain Range. In our design, we reoriented the main entry porch along the farm lane that leads to the pasture at the base of the mountain. This allowed a protected southern exposure as well as incredible views from the porch and the main rooms of the home. From the moment you step from the lane up the parallel entrance stair, you realize the magnificence of land that this house is a part of. We were able to maintain mature trees and complement the smallness of the original house with the new addition. The interior includes an open ceilinged living room, a master bedroom with a private porch and a “tavern room.” This home is truly a place of respite and prospect in a powerful landscape.
