A Bridge to an Addition, Charlottesville, Va.

Split level homes are inherently a challenge to easy accessibility. This home had the added challenge of a backyard swimming pool that was difficult to access from the house. The owner asked us for a master bedroom suite with an accessible main floor location, and they asked us for a bridge. The resulting addition is a master suite refuge that is easily accessed across a glassy bridge from the home’s main level living space. The bridge and master suite overlook the pool and the stream valley beyond is viewed from the curved balcony and the suite’s French doors. The pool itself is accessed down a landscaped stairway under the bridge. The bottom level of the addition functions as a shady, timber-colonnaded poolside cabana.
